Using Self Storage During The Monsoon Season

It’s that time of year again in Bangkok, the monsoon season. Every year Bangkok gets showered with rain storms as strong winds bring moisture from the Indian Ocean to the Southeast Asian region. The monsoon season in Bangkok will typically last for 3-4 months June-October. Anyone that has lived in Bangkok knows how much of an inconvenience this can be.

Bangkok has quite a unique climate with storms showering the city in the early mornings or late afternoons. This allows you to enjoy the day, and still be relatively dry. However this leads to another problem, flash flooding.

Flash flooding occurs when large quantities of rainfall in a very short period of time, overwhelming the drainage system and causing temporary flooding. Despite the Bangkok Metropolitan increasing the budget for upgrading drainage we are still fighting a losing battle.

Don’t worry, all is not lost.  If you think you are in an area that is prone to flooding you should consider looking into Self Storage as a preventative measure.

Below are the areas that are most prone to flooding in Bangkok City.

Why should I use Self Storage during the monsoon season?

Self Storage is a service that allows you to rent private storage units offering short and long term leases. These facilities will typically have 24-hour access and with multiple layers of security. This means you can come and go as you please and knowing your belongings are going to be safe, even safer than if it was at home. A good Self Storage facility will offer multiple storage sizes you can choose from. If they also have good service they will even allow you to switch units during your lease to accommodate more belongigns or to scale back and rent a smaller unit.

How To Prepare?

The first thing to do is to determine if you are at risk. If you are living in a high rise building in Bangkok you are probably ok and most likely will not be affected. Second thing is to be realistic, you are not going to empty your house of all electrical appliances and furniture or you’ll end up living in an empty house for 3 months of the year.

Right off the bat you have a few options, flood insurance and flood proofing your home. This can be done by raising the ground level or building a flood barrier. Both of these can be quite expensive endeavours.

This is where Self Storage can become useful as you store as needed when needed. Not every year will have heavy rainfall, some years might actually have very little rainfall. This may make getting flood insurance quite expensive. If you do decide to get the insurance what we can suggest is to insure the structure of the house by not the furniture. You can store the furniture and appliances in a self Storage facility.

Think about Self Storage as your backup plan, your Noah's ark  a safe place you are able to bring your belongings when you know a flood is coming or if you are concerned due to a heavier than normal monsoon season.
